Strolling around the neighbourhood - a Fotosafari

Petunia hosts a rather special kind of meme: it is almost without rules. You post what you see on your way; if and when you want to and then give her a notice. She keeps the blogroll. What rules there are can be found in her sidebar - the text is in Norwegian.

My contribution (the first time on this blog) is just one of my "daily" strolls around the neighbourhood and what I might spot on the way. As I have written elsewhere - when other people walk their dogs, I walk my cameras. Since it was Saturday my wife joined in too. Here follows a few sample of what we found:

It has been a fine day, but with the temperature around zero degrees C a bit of frosty haze in the air was only to be expected.

And of course some frost on the ground.

Such a carpet of frost often changes a well known subject into something totally different.

I even got a shot of a magpie squeezed between two telephone cables. Maybe it was creating its own network.

A picture of my nearest bridge and a walkway leading to it is a must

Since we live where three fjords meet there is always something happening on at least one of them.

Or on all three of them

Reflection on a University building

This is the new Service Building for the students at the University of Bergen (my old Alma Mater). It was opened last year and serves among others one of my children. The building it replaced was erected while I was a student. Either I am getting old, or the quality of the building process is not what it once was. Or both.

Chanel?!

I have to admit that the Chanel powder doesn't belong to me..
It's Nesli's precious property ; ) She was in charge of the "prop" hehe
We both thought of taking more or less a similar picture like the one from Michael Oat..

Unlike the powder..the bags aren't Chanel..
But they look really lovely together, don't you think so?

Ok, enough confessions for today.. : )

(cardigan - zara, scarf - h&m, blazer - expressions)

Vogue outside and vague on the inside

At the beginning of our blog I posted about these platform gladiator heels I finally bought at the sales. They are the highest shoes I have now with 12 cm heels (I think that's about 4.7 inches). Walking is pretty comfortable, though...

I made the grey nail polish myself, mixing black and white. I often create shades by myself because it's a cheap way to try different things. :)

We didn't post many pictures of ourselves recently but want to do this more often.
Hope you enjoy it!

London Underground cutting 1,000 jobs

Looks like the doom and gloom of the recession has finally hit the Tube as London Underground announce that 1,000 people will lose their jobs.

Tube Running a Skeleton Crew taken by Mark Ovende

Unlike the picture of skeleton staff above implies, LU said no front line staff or Tube drivers, would be out of a job, the cuts would be from temporary and administrative posts.

However, as we'd probably expect with the railway unions, they are saying they will fight the cuts, as they believe the reduction in jobs will lead to a reduced service.

Gerry Doherty, leader of TSSA, said: "This is a real body blow for staff and the London travelling public. There is no way that cuts of this size will not hit services. We should be investing in the Underground in the run up to the Olympics, not cutting back."

Bob Crow, leader of the RMT, was more bullish and hinted at strike action as a result of the announcement: "Any attempt to impose compulsory redundancies among our members or to undermine their terms and conditions will be met with a ballot for industrial action."

He added "Once again it seems if you are a banker you get protection, but if you are part of a team providing a public service you don't. There is no way that London's transport workers should be made to pay for the failure of the bankers and privateers whose greed has created the crisis our economy is now in."

He also agreed with Doherty by saying "There is no way that redundancies on this scale can be implemented without affecting the level of service. If the mayor is looking for efficiencies he should bring the Tube Lines PPP contracts back in house, because they are still draining huge sums of public money from London’s transport budget."

Tube Cuts 1,000 Jobs

The London Underground employs about 20,000 staff, and the jobs which are slated to go are from finance, IT, procurement, human resources, legal and administration.

For once I tend to agree with Bob Crow (well not about the threat of strikes bit, which he plays too often). I find it hard to see how an organisation can lose that many staff - in whatever functions - and for this to make no difference to the service it provides to the public.

Friday on the Tube

And in the midst of all the recession misery, some staff on the London Underground can still try to remind us one good thing:

Spotted by the lovely Melanie Seasons this morning at Warwick Avenue Tube. She said "The man who works there in the morning always writes the most ridiculous happy-go-lucky messages on the status board and I finally caught one.".

Sky Watch Friday # 43

Oslo Plaza (officially Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel) is situated in Oslo city centre. 117 metres high, it is Northern Europe's tallest and Norway's largest hotel, and the tallest building in Norway.

Hoisting Sky Watch Friday

You have to take your subjects where you can find them. For instance can a crane make an interesting pattern against the sky. In this case, right after sunrise in January.
First - the whole crane

Second - a bit closer and another angle

Third - a close-up for the technical interested

PS Please visit Sky Watch Friday's own site for more.
