Sandow Birk's The Word of God at the Warhol, Pgh PA

For five years Sandow Birk has been creating his epic body of work American Qur’an. In this ongoing series, Birk employs traditional Islamic calligraphy and painting techniques to illustrate the entire 114 Suras of the Qur'an. Using ink, gouache and a hand-lettered “font” based on graffiti tagging, he illuminates the verses with relevant scenes from contemporary American life. A selection of these Suras will be on view. This exhibition is the first in an ongoing series titled TheWord of God, which will examine major religious texts through the lens of contemporary art.

The Word of God Exhibitions and Project:

At a time when political parties fight viciously for the higher moral ground, when controversy reigns in the building of mosques, and when bigotry, abortion, and same-sex marriage are wedges of division in our culture there still remains room for interfaith understanding. The Warhol has, in its sixteen year history, presented difficult or controversial imagery and art in order to spark community dialogue. The dialogues and visitor experiences from such encounters with art and images are powerful and potentially community changing.

East of Liberty Public Screening

Feb 18,19 2011 @ 8pm

Adults $10, Students $5

Chris Ivey:

“I was hired to document the tearing down of the high rises. At the same time I interviewed some of the residents who lived in the high rises and they weren’t happy at all because of the spectacle that was before them. They were really angry. It was their home, it was where they used to live, some for 30 years or more. Even though in many ways it wasn’t the best place to live it was all they had and to see strangers having fun by shooting paintballs at the block left them furious.”

Jimmy Cvetic, Secret Society of Dog poetry reading, Pittsburgh, Pa

Awesome Books/Lascaux Editions is happy to announce the publication of Jimmy Cvetic's Secret Society of Dog, his debut book of poetry with Awesome Books.

Jimmy Cvetic, aka Dog, is a retired Allegheny County cop who writes like Bukowski with a badge. Having worked for over 30 years in Pittsburgh as a uniformed officer, an undercover narcotics agent, and a homicide detective, Cvetic offers a unique glimpse into the real life trials, tribulations, and black humor of police work. Having amassed over three thousand poems over the past fourdecades, he bears witness to the full range of the human drama - from horrific tragedies to dark comedies of folly.

Jimmy Cvetic will read from Secret Society of Dog at Hemingway's, 3911 Forbes Avenue in Oakland.

The reading starts at 8 pm on Tues, Nov. 16,and admission is FREE.

"These are the best poems I've ever read about cops. Not only are the voices totally convincing, but the poems are various in terms of tone and content. And the comic poems bristle with a black humor appropriate to their subject. Secret Society of Dog is a terrific read."
Ed Ochester
, poet and Editor of the Pitt Poetry Series

"This is a poet that moves me and scares the hell outta me but he's too much of a human being to veer from the truth. He's a retired narcotics officer that lived the streets, who writes from depths of soul. His poetry speaks to the heart of the human condition."
Nick Nolte, actor The Prince of Tides, Affliction, 48 Hours, Lorenzo's Oil, The Thin Red Line

Gatherings, Artist Becky Slemmons, Pittsburgh Pa

Prior to this blog post I learned about artist Becky Slemmons' project and I found the concept compelling to say the least. It's good to see this has taken form:

Gatherings
a socially-based, performative art project
September 5, 2010 to present date and on-going

“Gatherings,” an on-going socially-based, performative art project began on September 5, 2010 and continues presently. The project (an assignment the artist gave herself) goes like this: Ms. Slemmons will attend one or more different places of worship in Pittsburgh every week for a year (or however long it takes to reach her goal of 100 visits), choosing temples, churches, synagogues and mosques primarily in neighborhoods without abundant access to art. She has made a white dress, which she wears to every worship visit. In response to each visit (in her own studio between visits), she adds pieces of fabric and/or embroidery to the dress; with the accumulation of experiences, the dress grows and changes in appearance. She creates a page of drawings for each worship experience (during each visit, if possible) and documents gatherings with photographs, off-site video and this blog: www.gatheringspittsburgh.blogspot.com/ . (Look here to find the location of her next visit.) At year's end, she plans to exhibit the work in a yet-to-be-determined Pittsburgh art gallery.

The impetus for “gatherings” is as follows: Creative folk and worship places: in Pittsburgh you can't go a block without running into one or the other. But can it be, that never the twain shall meet? Of course not. And when they do, what form will the search for common ground take, between spiritual ritual and the ritual of art-making? Could an art project based on the cultural tradition of attending services remain non-religious in purpose, while providing arts exposure to Pittsburgh communities that normally do not have access? Raise hope for tolerance? This creative soul says yes.

Through “gatherings,” I wish to question whether the ritual of art-making and the spiritual ritual are not at odds, with hopes that this starting point will prove fertile ground to launch new opportunities for appreciation of, involvement in, and exposure to art. I also wish to raise an awareness of and hope for tolerance.

I am not a specifically religious person (I do not embrace a specific set of beliefs), but I am fascinated with:
• The role that belief plays in society, the need it fulfills for those who partake.
• The similarities in differently-labeled spiritual mythologies.
• The conflict unfortunately perpetuated.
• I am intrigued by people who don't need proof.
• And I am interested in the role that these ideas play in art-making, the common questions that both pursue to answer: In what way do I see the world? How am I to live in it? Who am I within the larger scheme of things?

Art project spruces up Carrick

Art project spruces up Carrick
Tuesday, September 14, 2010
By Diana Nelson Jones, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Retail on Carrick's portion of Brownsville -- at two miles one of the city's longest commercial corridors -- far outweighs vacancies, but several dusty windows block after block are too much, said Ms. Rosenfeld, 42, a former teacher's aide. "It was beautiful when I was growing up, and it has beautiful potential."

...

Artists who spruced up Carrick's vacant storefronts include Steve Hutter of Knoxville, Tommy Mason of Washington, Pa., Lynsey Kern of Allison Park, Melissa Rosenfeld of Carrick, Gail Matus of Carrick, Kathryn Carr of Bethel Park and Mary Grace Nichol of Crafton.

A board member of the Carrick Community Council, she said the group's goal "is to transform Carrick into one of the up-and-coming neighborhoods, like Lawrenceville did." The council's website is www.carrickpa.com.

New Public Art Murals Thanks to the Sprout Fund, Pittsburgh PA 2010

The Sprout Fund murals which have recently been finished (most of them) are among some of my favorites so far. Regardless, the work they do is crucial to a town where new public art has become harder to come by as far as what happens through the City of Pittsburgh.

With more than $3.5 million invested in nearly 400 civic and community initiatives since 2001, Sprout continues to support innovative ideas and grassroots community projects that are catalyzing change in Pittsburgh.

Donation info can be found here.

Info from Sprout Fund on the murals (Curt Gettman's words):

East Liberty (5877 Commerce Street) – Artist: Brian Brown (will be completed spring 2011) – Title: TBD

Artist held a photo day where over 75 community members came out to have their portrait taken. Brian will be working around 40 portraits from that session into the finished mural.

Oakdale (5023 Noblestown Road) – Artist: Diane Adams - Title: America’s Home Town

Diane has previously painted murals for Sprout’s regional Community Connections initiative.

Trafford (425 Cavitt Avenue) – Artist: Berry Breene – Title: Windows to our future, portals from the past

Mural greets viewers as they enter town on the Tri-Borough Expressway. Has changed the feel of the borough’s primary gateway immensely.

Uptown (2106 Forbes Avenue – Artist: Gabe Felice – Title: Open Heaven Open Sky

Community gave Gabe free reign to paint pretty much whatever he wanted. The resulting multi-layered, organic design is some of Gabe’s best work yet.

Strip District (1907 Penn Avenue) – Artists: Carley Parrish and Shannon Pultz – Title: The Strip Mural

This extremely large mural inspired by collage artist Romare Bearden (and the hustle bustle of daily life in the Strip) is just about finished. Artists are attaching metal birds as sculptural elements to complete the work. Should be completely done by this weekend.

Wilkinsburg (745 Penn Avenue – Artists: Jesse Best and Brian Holderman – Title: 10,000

Another big one. Brian previously painted a portion of this same wall in 2003 (the first year of the program). He returned in 2010 with his friend Jesse Best and created a more sophisticated design that uses the entire wall.

Sprout Public Art improves the image of the region and enhances the visual landscape of neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities of Allegheny County by creating high quality public art. The program encourages dialogue on public art between the community and the artist, contributes to community and neighborhood development, and raises awareness about the important role that local artists can have in shaping communities.

Over eight seasons of Sprout Public Art and local communities have collaborated with artists to develop 56 enduring works of public art that enhance the urban landscape and consider the people of the community, their history and their hopes for the future.

Recent support for Sprout Public Art was generously provided in part by The Laurel Foundation, The PNC Foundation, The Allegheny Regional Asset District and other generous donors.

Conflict Kitchen (Kubideh) Goes Afghan (Pittsburgh PA)

Four months ago, a group of artists associated with Carnegie Mellon University launched an experiment to spark conversations about countries at odds with the United States. In Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood, they set up Conflict Kitchen, a take-out restaurant promoting culinary and cultural diversity. Opened with offerings of Iranian food, the venue is about to become an Afghani restaurant with a new name, a fresh menu and an updated facade. The national focus is planned to change at least twice more before the project comes to an end.

“In contrast to the polarizing effect of broadcast media, we’ve sought to create a platform which can support a more subtle exchange of culture and politics," notes Dawn Weleski, a multidisciplinary artist wiht a performance bent, who co-founded the project with Jon Rubin and John Peña. "With food as a mediator, it becomes easier for customers to consider the everyday life of people — they become responsive in a different way and consider more nuanced perspectives. They start to consider the people and culture behind conflicts [that are conducted] at a government or military level.”

The newest Conflict Kitchen, Bolani Pazi, offers the popular Afghani street food bolani. The stuffed flatbread will come in a choice of four fillings — pumpkin, potato and leek, spinach or lentil — topped with a dollop of yogurt. Food wrappings will be printed with comments by Afghanis on topics in popular culture and politics.

Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

Verdure's Issue 3, the Library Issue, features the art of Cara Lynn Kleid. Check out her website here.

Verdure is a new community-based magazine dedicated to helping concerned residents of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania make educated and informed choices.

We will be highlighting local producers, telling the stories of our communities, and helping our readers to cut their energy bills. In each issue, you'll find local projects and volunteer opportunities, a calendar of upcoming events, stuff to do with the kids and "Hoof It," a column devoted to walking activities in our neighborhoods.

We will be charging a buck for each copy, which we think will put our magazine into the hands of people looking to make some changes. People who care and will spend their dollars a little differently if we give them some tools and resources. 50 cents of every sale will go back into green and sustainable projects in the community. We're still working on that part, but we hope to establish a fund with the possibility of making grants and loans to local organizations and start-ups that share our passion for a clean, green Pittsburgh.
