Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/3/2011Violence continues on the streets of Cairo, with opponents and supporters of President Mubarak clashing with rocks, sticks, and occasional gunfire. More people have been killed, although the exact number is uncertain. Foreign journalists have been attacked and detained. One report says that Hezbollah members who escaped from prison in Egypt have made it to Lebanon. The AFL-CIO and ICTU are publicly supporting the revolution.

The United States is pressing President Mubarak to step down now, but the president says he cannot do that, or Egypt would descend into chaos.

In other news, a Buddhist monk was arrested in Bhutan for violating the country’s anti-smoking law by using chewing tobacco. He may be subject to five years’ imprisonment if convicted.
