Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/11/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/11/2011Hosni Mubarak’s departure as president of Egypt has fueled speculation about what will come next in Cairo. The army has promised the people it will maintain order until a new government is in place, and that there will be real democratic elections. It has also promised to end thirty years of emergency law. Whether these promises are compatible with one another is yet to be seen.

Meanwhile, stirrings of revolt are beginning in Morocco and Libya, and more protests are coming in Algeria. Italy expects increasingly large numbers of refugees to land on its shores after fleeing the chaos across the Mediterranean.

In related news, NASA has agreed to name a Mars-bound rocket after one of the martyrs of the street fighting in Egypt.
