After Elliot McNally’s Star Trek Quilts series in January, WildCard returns to the pop art
mold with Matthew Buchholz’s Alternate Histories: Pittsburgh premiering on Friday,
August 13th.

The series consists of replicas of old posters, engravings, and historical photographs from
Pittsburgh’s past, doctored to include fantastical images of monsters, steampunk
machinery, and science gone awry. By combining the pop sci-fi appeal of 1950s monster
movies with traditional historic images, the Alternate Histories series encourages the
viewer to look at history in a new way. Each piece is accompanied by a satirical
description of the event taking place.

“The goal of each piece is to look completely normal to someone just passing by,” says
Buchholz. “Then, upon a closer view, you start to notice just what’s wrong with this
picture.” By focusing entirely on Pittsburgh history, Buchholz is also able to place
oversize figures like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick in surprising new contexts.
This opening marks the start of a new series for former filmmaker Buchholz, whose film
& video exploration “CinemaFantastique” previously showed at Future Tenant. In
addition to the 11 framed pieces on display, prints of the work will be available for sale.
WildCard is hosting an opening night party on Friday, August 13, from 6 to 9pm.
