DVD Review: Jim Settee: The Way Home

When examining a series of smaller communities in a somewhat remote area, one may be able to find a single person who can make a large difference and touch many lives. Such a man was the subject of this documentary, Jim Settee.
We are introduced to Settee indirectly at first, through the eyes of filmmaker Jeanne Corrigal, who I am happy to count among my acquaintances. She grew up at the Fish Lake Métis Settlement community in Central Saskatchewan in the Prince Albert area, which was created in the most part by Settee, technically a Métis, but self-identified as Cree.
During a dark period of Canadian / First Nations / Métis history, the federal government of Canada declared that those of mixed Aboriginal and white ancestry (Métis) were not permitted to live on the same reserves as “pure” First Nations, so Settee helped create the Fish Lake Settlement near the reserve where he was raised to help keep families at least close by.
This is just one legacy of a man whose presence reached through his command of oral history of the area, leadership, and tracking skills, just to name a couple of venues (which are lovely and fascinatingly described in this project). But due to his passing away before the film was finished, well into his 90s, much of his story is told by others. Fortunately, there is footage of him and lots of still pictures. Most of his life, however, is told in testimonials by those who loved him, including his immediate family who convey some touching tales, such as those involving tall towers and matchboxes.

This film, however, is more than just about Jim Settee; its focus is, indeed, the way home for both Settee and filmmaker Corrigal. There is a parallel passage as both of them search for their own spiritual journey at different points in their lives. The two’s paths intersected at a time when Corrigal was feeling lost (in her words), and her reacquaintance with the elder Settee after he had found his own road helped her find hers. For Settee, it was being ordained in the Anglican Church at age 86 (this is not a spoiler, as this fact is stated on the film’s box). As for Corrigal, the way was in a totally different direction, as she now leads a Mindful Meditation group in Saskatoon (contact her at the email above for further information). How Settee’s Anglican background and Corrigal’s own passage were able to transcend each other to find a meeting place is a touching and central focus of the film.
Spirituality, in all forms rather than just Anglican, is key here, though that plays an important broken-rather-than-double line down the film’s center, permitting changing lanes for the viewers with which to identify.
When I saw this documentary, it was being sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal Student Centre and an on-campus multi-faith organization, represented at the screening by a Lutheran Reverend and a Conservative Rabbi, neither one of which embodied Settee’s Anglican leaning; however, there was a strong-yet-gentle spiritual guidance to the film, thanks to Corrigal’s tender touch and commentary (she appears in The Way Home as well).
There are many moments in the film that are moving, possibly transforming, for those who still feel lost, or perhaps needing reassurance. Thanks to Corrigal, Settee’s mentorship goes beyond his life, perhaps to the seventh generation.

Moorings and Millsites, artist Dan Kuhn
March 25, 2011 - May 29, 2011Inspired by the melding of the natural and industrial landscapes that define Western Pennsylvania, artist Dan Kuhn explores Allegheny Counties changing environment through gestural ceramic sculptures. Choosing to work in forms that defy function, Kuhn’s sculptures mimic the sometimes rolling, often ragged mountainside. Planes and angles are defined with layered clay slips which create a subtle, earthy backdrop for imagery. The rust-colored decals reveal “engineered images of the Allegheny River… combined with photographs of Allegheny Ludlum and the surrounding towns, inferring a private connection and adaptation to the landscapes, “ explains Kuhn.
A native of Western Pennsylvania, Dan grew up in a small steel town, north east of Pittsburgh. He earned a BFA in ceramics at California University of Pennsylvania and recently completed his MFA in ceramics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Dan has been a technician and teacher for the Chautuaqua School of Arts, Wortendyke Ceramics studio, IUP Ceramics studio, Touchstone Center for Crafts, and SCC.
The artist currently works locally as a functional and sculptural ceramic artist as well as a teacher of throwing, hand-building and kiln firing. As a finalist in the 2011 Lydon Emerging Artist Program at SCC, Kuhn’s work is featured exclusively at SCC’s The Store.
Learn to decal with Dan Kuhn at SCC with his Introduction to Photo Decals class, to be held on Saturday June 4, 2011, 10-4pm and Sunday, June 5, 10-12pm. The tuition is $100 with a materials fee of $20. To register for this class call Laura at 412.261.7003.
SCC’s Satellite Gallery is located at 500 Grant Street in the lobby of the Steel Plaza T-Station at BNY Mellon Center in downtown Pittsburgh. It is open daily through midnight.

Ragnar Kjartansson: Song is the first solo US museum exhibition of the work of Ragnar Kjartansson. A musician as well as artist, Kjartansson (b. 1976) has been drawn to the theater and performance since he formed a band in his teenage years. The exhibition will include a selection of video works from the last decade, as well as a newly created three-week-long performance for the museum’s Hall of Sculpture.

Harry Beck and the Tube Map Exhibition
Your last chance to see a display on the development of the London Underground map. There's a small exhibition at the soon to be closed Church Farmhouse Museum in Hendon which runs until Sunday 27th March.

Harry Beck, came from Finchley and was the first person to simplify the design of the map by avoiding geographical scale. His map, reputedly based on an electrical wiring diagram, dispensed with realism in favour of readability and still the inspiration for many other subway maps around the world.
Londonist's M@ says "Highlights include a map showing a thwarted extension of the Northern Line to Elstree, a pre-Beck chart showing the exact tunnel routes beneath London’s streets, and the much maligned Hutchinson map of 1960 — an ugly duckling beside Beck’s creations but innovative in its use of station symbols."

There's also a small exhibition of 20th Century games and toys at the musuem. Sadly, Barnet Council are withdrawing the museum's funding at the end of the financial year.
Thanks to John Keogh for the above picture and there are others including the lovely garden in the museum's grounds in his Flickr stream.
Admission to the exhibition is free and the nearest Tube is Hendon Central. More details on the opening times are on the Museum's site.

April 2011 Pittsburgh Art Guide, also March 25, 26th
No worries about there being so much on Friday, April 1, 2011 as far as openings. I would prioritize with the GA/GI Festival (along with Unblurred) as the other openings have galleries with regular hours. By cramming too many openings into one night the art tends to take a back seat.
Note that for GA/GI they may not list all the Unblurred events. As of this posting April 1 events have not been listed yet but the usual venues plus the GA/GI events will be happening.
